There’s no shame in buying toilet paper

The other day I bought toilet paper and thought: “Uh, this is kinda personal, what if somebody sees me?” But then I decided that I didn’t care and forgot about it.

When I arrived home I met one of my neighbors in the hallway. We said hello and then he looked at the pack of toilet paper in my hand. After hesitating for a second, he asked if I didn’t feel uncomfortable carrying toilet paper in public. He also added that he always made sure to buy the biggest pack available, so he wouldn’t have to do it too often.

I don’t know if it’s a Swiss thing, but people around here don’t like to share too many personal things with strangers. And toilet paper is obviously something very personal. The weird thing is that I completely understand this feeling, but it just doesn’t make any sense.

Oh well, if buying toilet paper is really a problem, we can always order it online via Le Shop or coop@home ;-)

Ok, I think this one must be a Swiss thing. I swear, in the US you will see people walk around with toilet paper, feminine products, and condoms and they walk around proud. It’s amazing. Nice to see there is still some modesty in Geneva. Although, we all DO need toilet paper….

I’m not sure if it’s really modesty. A lot of Swiss are afraid of what other people might think, so there’s probably a pinch of shame in there as well.

In any case, I can’t imagine Swiss people being proud of walking around with toilet paper ;-)
